TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia, through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, continues to increase its commitment to help overcome the impacts of climate change . A kick-off meeting with all ministries and institutions to discuss the Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) was held in Jakarta on February 21, 2024.
NDC is a national commitment to addressing global climate change to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. The meeting discussed sectoral policy developments such as Indonesia FOLU Net-sink 2030, Zero Waste Zero Emission, and energy transition.
The Director General of Climate Change Control at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Laksmi Dwanthi, said that based on the mandate of the Paris Agreement, each country member of the Paris Agreement must submit a second NDC no later than March 2025. Indonesia plans to submit it in August 2024.
"This new commitment will be implemented to achieve the Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction target with our own capabilities and with international support in 2031 to 2035, which is in line with the 1.5 degrees Celsius plan," said Laksmi on Monday.
"In contrast to the commitments in the previous NDCs (First NDC, Updated NDC, and Enhanced NDC), the Second NDC will compare GHG emission reductions against the reference year of 2019, which is based on GHG inventory, so it no longer uses the ‘business as usual’ baseline," said Lakshmi. Globally, the 2030 GHG emissions reduction should be 43% by 2030.
"In the Second NDC document, Indonesia will also update the transparency framework which includes the National Registry System (SRN) and MRV (measurement, reporting, and verification) to ensure the achievement of NDC targets and the implementation of Carbon Economic Value to support verified NDC and contribute to global efforts prevent the temperature from increasing by 1.5 degrees Celcius," Laksmi added.
